Broke several trying to hammer through clay soil, they hold the membrane firm but best to make the hole using a screwdriver to prevent breakages. I ordered 100 but have more than half left over, can be used sparingley and will still do the same job although it can depend on finish as I slabbed over them but if was using for planting then may use as recommended.

Very poor quality. Even with gentle use of mallet, either the top breaks off or the spike bends. Only solution to get any use out of them was to break off about 2" of the spike and gently tease the rest into the ground. I don't recommend these at all. Anything other than soft ground, forget it! (my mistake was not testing one out after purchase - or I'd have sent them back). I left it too late, unfortunately...
